The residents of Migori County go to the polls today to elect a new senator in a by-election after the demise of Senator Ben Oluoch Okello. The late senator succumbed to throat cancer and was buried last month.
3880000 voters are expected to cast their votes in the ballot in the 826 polling stations across the County.
IEBC commissioner in charge of the county professor Abdi Guliye confirmed that all polling material’s deployment had been completed by 12am.
Security has also been biffed up despite worries of planned riots by a group of youths. The county commissioner has promised a calm environment for voters. Security officers have been sent to the region.
The senatorial race has five contestants. Ochilo Ayacko of ODM party, Eddy Oketch of Federal Party of Kenya, Peter Jobando of Green Congress Party, Solomo Hodo of People’s Democratic Party and Dickson Ogolla who is an independent candidate.
The by-election takes place at a time when all eyes are set on the high court decison whether Governor of the County Okoth Obado has been remanded back to industrial area police after being admitted to Kenyatta hospital on Friday.
He faces charges against the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno. The governor was alleged to have had a love relationship with the student.
The case will be heard on Monday 8 October 2018 by Lady Justice Jessie Lessit.
